Strada del Ponale & Punta Larici
Two breathtaking mountain routes above Limone sul Garda — for cyclists who want more than the Ciclovia. Spectacular lake views, ancient tunnels, and climbs that reward every pedal stroke.
Beyond the Ciclovia: The Mountain Routes
The Ciclovia del Garda is the headline act — and rightly so. But Limone sul Garda has more to offer cyclists than its famous suspended path. The town sits at the foot of the Monte Baldo massif, and the mountains above it hide two routes that are, in their own way, just as spectacular.
The Strada del Ponale is a historic mountain road carved into the cliffs above the western shore of Lake Garda — now closed to motor traffic and open only to cyclists and hikers. The Punta Larici route climbs even higher, rewarding those who make the effort with one of the most panoramic viewpoints on the entire lake.
Both routes involve significant climbing. Both are best enjoyed on an e-bike. And both deliver views that will stay with you long after you return home. This guide covers everything you need to know to ride them.
The Two Routes
Here is a detailed breakdown of each route, including distance, elevation, difficulty, and what makes each one special.
Strada del Ponale
Historic RoadThe Strada del Ponale is one of the most historically significant cycling routes on Lake Garda. Originally built in the 1850s as a mule track connecting Riva del Garda to the Ledro Valley, it was later widened into a proper road. Today, after being closed to motor traffic, it has been transformed into one of the most atmospheric cycling routes in northern Italy.
The route follows the cliff face above the western shore of Lake Garda, passing through a series of short tunnels carved into the rock. Each tunnel opens onto a new panoramic view of the lake — the effect is dramatic and unforgettable. The road surface is good throughout, and the gradient is manageable on an e-bike.
Punta Larici
Panoramic SummitPunta Larici is the more demanding of the two routes — and the more rewarding. The climb from Limone sul Garda to the Punta Larici viewpoint gains around 650 metres of elevation, following a mix of paved mountain roads and forest tracks through the Monte Baldo nature reserve.
The viewpoint at Punta Larici offers a 180-degree panorama of Lake Garda that is genuinely among the finest in Italy. On a clear day, you can see from the southern end of the lake near Sirmione all the way north to the Dolomites. The descent back to Limone is fast and exhilarating on a good mountain bike.
"The tunnels of the Ponale open one by one onto views of the lake that seem almost too beautiful to be real — like cycling through a series of perfectly framed paintings."

Why an E-Bike is Essential for These Routes

The Ciclovia del Garda is manageable on a standard bike for fit cyclists. The Strada del Ponale and Punta Larici are not. Both routes involve sustained climbing from Limone sul Garda — a town that already sits on a steep hillside — and the gradients can be punishing in the summer heat.
On a KTM e-MTB from Limone Bike Rental, these climbs become genuinely enjoyable. The KTM Macina Team 792 is our top recommendation for both routes — its full-suspension geometry handles the technical descents on Punta Larici, while the powerful motor makes the Ponale climb feel effortless. The KTM Gran Macina 620 is also excellent for the Ponale, which has a smoother surface throughout.

Practical Tips for Both Routes
Best time
Early morning (7:00–9:00) for cooler temperatures and better light. Both routes face west, making afternoon light particularly beautiful for photography.
Water & food
Carry at least 1 litre per person for the Ponale, 1.5 litres for Punta Larici. There are no cafes or fountains on either route. Fuel up at Dal Piasarot before you leave.
Lights for the Ponale
The Strada del Ponale passes through several unlit tunnels. A front light is essential — not optional. Rear lights are also recommended.
Puncture kit
Both routes are remote. Carry a puncture repair kit and a spare inner tube. Limone Bike Rental provides basic tools with all rentals.
Book the right bike
For Punta Larici, book the KTM Macina Team 792 (full-suspension e-MTB). For the Ponale, the KTM Gran Macina 620 or Macina Team both work well. Book via WhatsApp at least one day in advance.
