What is the Ciclovia del Garda?

The Ciclovia del Garda — also known as the Ciclopista del Garda — is an ambitious long-term project to create a dedicated cycle path around the entire perimeter of Lake Garda. The dream is to connect the towns and villages of Lombardy, Trentino, and Veneto by bike, without sharing the road with cars.

However, as of today, the full circuit does not yet exist. The project is still under construction and only a few sections have been completed. The most celebrated and iconic of these is the section near Limone sul Garda, where the sheer limestone cliffs made it impossible to build a conventional road-level path — so engineers designed a breathtaking suspended walkway that clings to the rock face and floats above the water.

This Limone section quickly became a global sensation after its opening, featured by international travel media as one of the most beautiful cycle paths on Earth. It is the main reason cyclists from across Europe and beyond come to Limone sul Garda.

The Limone sul Garda Section

The section of the Ciclovia del Garda that starts in Limone sul Garda is the most spectacular stretch of the entire project. Starting from the town centre, cyclists ride northward along the western shore of the lake, before the path transitions onto the suspended walkway — a modern engineering marvel anchored into the ancient limestone cliffs.

The suspended section offers continuous panoramic views across the lake to the mountains of Trentino and Veneto. The path is wide enough for cyclists to pass comfortably, and the metal railings provide a reassuring sense of security even for those who might feel nervous about the height.

The total round trip from Limone sul Garda covers approximately 10 km. Keep in mind that Limone sul Garda is a mountain town: while the suspended section itself is flat, the access roads from town involve some uphill and downhill stretches. For a comfortable, enjoyable experience, we strongly recommend an e-bike — it makes all the difference on those climbs and lets you focus entirely on the breathtaking views.

Can You Cycle Around the Whole Lake?

This is one of the most common questions we receive. The honest answer is: not entirely by dedicated cycle path. While the full Ciclovia del Garda is planned, the majority of the lake's perimeter is still accessed by road — including the famous SS45bis on the western shore and the SS249 on the eastern shore.

Experienced cyclists do ride around the lake using these roads, but it requires sharing the road with cars and trucks, and is not suitable for casual or family riders. The dedicated cycle path sections — like the Limone suspended path — are where you get the true, safe, car-free cycling experience.

Our recommendation: focus on the Limone section of the Ciclovia, which is the most beautiful and safest stretch. Combine it with other nearby routes such as the Strada del Ponale or Punta Larici for a full day of incredible cycling around Limone sul Garda.

Scenic Views Above Lake Garda

The views from the Ciclovia del Garda suspended section are genuinely among the most beautiful in Italy. To the east, the lake stretches south toward Sirmione and Desenzano, its surface changing colour with the light — from deep blue in the morning to shimmering silver at midday and golden at sunset. To the west, the steep cliffs of the Baldo mountain range rise dramatically, their limestone faces streaked with vegetation.

Several natural viewpoints along the route offer opportunities to stop, rest, and take photographs. The most popular spot is a wide platform approximately halfway along the suspended section, where the path widens and cyclists can safely pause to admire the panorama. This is also the most photographed location on the entire route, and the backdrop for countless memorable travel images.
