Cycling with Kids in Limone sul Garda
The Ciclovia del Garda is one of the most family-friendly cycling routes in Italy. Here is everything you need to know for a perfect day on the bike with children.
Why Limone sul Garda is Perfect for Family Cycling
Cycling with children requires a different kind of planning. You need flat or gently rolling terrain, a safe surface away from traffic, regular stopping points, and — crucially — something interesting enough to keep young riders motivated. Limone sul Garda ticks every one of these boxes.
The Ciclovia del Garda — the suspended cycle path that runs along the western shore of Lake Garda — is one of the most extraordinary cycling experiences in Italy, and it is genuinely accessible to families with children from around 5 years old. The path is entirely car-free, the surface is smooth and well-maintained, and the views of the lake are so spectacular that even the most reluctant young cyclist tends to forget they are pedalling. Important note: to reach the Ciclovia from the town centre of Limone, there are significant uphill and downhill sections. For this reason, we strongly recommend renting an electric bike (e-bike) — the motor makes these climbs effortless and ensures the whole family arrives at the path with energy to enjoy it.
At Limone Bike Rental, we have two shops on Via IV Novembre with over 200 bikes — including a full range of children's bikes (24" and 26" KTM wheels, suitable for children from approximately 1.35m tall), e-bikes for older children, and child seats for younger children (child seat included FREE with any rental). Our team can advise you on the right setup for your family, and with free parking right outside both shops, getting started is completely stress-free.

Best Routes for Families
Not all routes in Limone are suitable for children. Here are the three best options, from the easiest to the most adventurous.
Ciclovia del Garda — Limone Section
Best for familiesDistance
4 km one way (8 km return)
Surface
Smooth asphalt + suspended boardwalk
Difficulty
Moderate — uphill/downhill to reach the path; flat once on the Ciclovia
Suitable age
From 5 years (on own bike) / from 1 year (in child seat — FREE)
The classic family route. From the Limone Bike Rental shops, head north along the Ciclovia del Garda towards the suspended section — the famous boardwalk built over the lake. Important: the route from town to the Ciclovia involves real uphill and downhill sections — an e-bike is strongly recommended for parents. Once on the Ciclovia itself, the path is flat and car-free. Many children manage the climbs depending on their fitness level, and we also have e-bikes available for older children. The suspended boardwalk section is absolutely spectacular. Total time with stops: 2–3 hours.
Limone Town & Lakefront Promenade
Ideal for small childrenDistance
2–3 km loop
Surface
Smooth paved paths
Difficulty
Very easy — flat lakefront
Suitable age
All ages including toddlers
For families with very young children (under 5) or those who prefer a shorter, more relaxed outing, the Limone lakefront promenade is ideal. A gentle loop through the historic centre, past the old lemon houses (limonaie), along the harbour and back. Plenty of benches, cafés, and gelato stops along the way. This works perfectly as a warm-up before or after the Ciclovia section.
Strada del Ponale — Lower Section
For older childrenDistance
5 km one way (10 km return)
Surface
Compacted gravel + some asphalt
Difficulty
Moderate — gentle uphill climb
Suitable age
From 10–12 years (on own bike) / e-bike recommended for parents
For families with older children who are confident cyclists, the lower section of the Strada del Ponale offers a completely different experience — a historic mule track carved into the cliff face above the lake, with breathtaking views and ancient tunnels. The climb is gradual (about 200m elevation over 5km) and very manageable on an e-bike. The views from the top are extraordinary. Not suitable for young children on their own bikes.
"The moment children see the turquoise water directly below the suspended path, they stop complaining about pedalling. The Ciclovia del Garda does the motivating for you."

Perfect for the Ciclovia and the lakefront promenade. The Ciclovia has significant uphill and downhill sections on the way from town — many children manage depending on their fitness level. We also have e-bikes available for older children who want extra assistance on the climbs.
City Bike (with child seat option)
€12–€25/day
For parents with children under 5. A child seat is included FREE with any rental — it can be fitted to the rear of the city bike or e-bike, allowing you to carry a child up to approximately 22kg. Comfortable and stable for the Ciclovia route.
E-Trekking KTM Gran Macina 620
€20–€45/day

Best Stops Along the Way
One of the secrets to a successful family cycling day is knowing where to stop. Here are the best spots in Limone sul Garda.
Là Banca — Delizia al Limone

The legendary lemon gelato of Limone sul Garda. Children love the fresh, intense flavour. Also serves lemon granita and limoncello for adults. Perfect mid-ride stop.

House of Lemonade & Spritz
Fresh lemonade & granita
Freshly squeezed lemonade made with local Limone lemons — the perfect drink for children on a warm day. Also serves granita and soft drinks.
Porto di Limone (Harbour Beach)
Swimming & paddling
A small pebble beach at the harbour where children can paddle or swim in the crystal-clear lake water. A perfect reward at the end of the ride.
Safety Tips for Family Cycling
Helmets are mandatory
Helmets are required for all cyclists in Italy. Limone Bike Rental provides helmets for all ages — ask at the shop when you collect your bikes. Make sure the helmet fits correctly before setting off.
Sun protection
The Ciclovia del Garda has very little shade. Apply sunscreen before riding, bring a sun hat for stops, and carry water. Children dehydrate faster than adults — plan a drink stop every 30–40 minutes.
Traffic rules
The Ciclovia is car-free, but the lakefront promenade has some pedestrian traffic. Teach children to ring their bell and slow down near pedestrians. Keep to the right and pass on the left.
Hydration
Carry at least 0.5L of water per person. There are drinking fountains in the centre of Limone and at the harbour. In summer, the heat can be significant — plan your ride for the morning (before 11:00) or late afternoon (after 17:00).
Stay together
On the Ciclovia, keep the group together — especially on the suspended section where the path is narrow. Agree on a meeting point at the start in case anyone gets separated.
